History

Bellefontaine was founded in 1820 by James Gilchrist, a surveyor from Pennsylvania. He named the city after the French phrase for "beautiful fountain," which was inspired by the many springs in the area. The city was incorporated in 1835 and became the county seat of Logan County in 1839.
Bellefontaine was an important stop on the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad, which connected the city to the rest of the country. The railroad was instrumental in the growth of the city, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
The city was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, which was used by escaped slaves to reach freedom in the North. Bellefontaine was home to several prominent abolitionists, including John Rankin and Levi Coffin.
