Bedford Summary
Bedford, Ohio is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The population was 13,074 at the 2010 census.
History
Bedford was first settled in 1813 by John and Mary Wilcox. The town was originally known as "Unionville" and was later renamed "Bedford" after the town of Bedford, England. The town was incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Bedford was a popular summer resort for wealthy Clevelanders. The town was home to several large hotels, including the Bedford Springs Hotel, which was built in 1837 and was one of the first hotels in the area.
Geography
Bedford is located at 41°23'25"N 81°30'45"W (41.390278, -81.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Bedford is home to several large employers, including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the Bedford City School District. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 13,074 people, 5,717 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.2 people per square mile (621.7/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 751.3 per square mile (290.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 5,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $31,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
