Avon Lake Summary

Avon Lake is a city located in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. It is located on the shore of Lake Erie, approximately 20 miles west of Cleveland. The population was 22,581 at the 2010 census.

History

Avon Lake was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as "Town of Rochester" and was later renamed "Avon Lake" in 1822. The name was chosen to reflect the town's proximity to Lake Erie.
Avon Lake was incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1921. The city has grown steadily since then, with the population increasing from 4,000 in 1950 to 22,581 in 2010.

Geography

Avon Lake is located at 41°27'N 82°1'W (41.45, -82.02). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Economy

Avon Lake is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Lubrizol Corporation, a specialty chemical company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 22,581 people, 8,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,062.2 people per square mile (797.2/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 871.2 per square mile (337.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $76,917. Males had a median income of $51,917 versus $37,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,917. About 2.7% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
