Union Springs Summary

Introduction

Union Springs is a small village located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It is situated in the town of Springport, Cayuga County, and is located on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake. The village has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census. It is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the Finger Lakes and its many attractions.

History

The area that is now Union Springs was first settled in the late 1700s by settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as "Unionville" and was incorporated in 1848. The name was changed to Union Springs in 1851.
The village was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many escaped slaves passing through on their way to Canada. The village was also home to a number of prominent abolitionists, including William Seward, who served as Governor of New York from 1839 to 1842.
