Roslyn, New York is a village located in Nassau County on the North Shore of Long Island. It is part of the Town of North Hempstead and is situated between the villages of East Hills and Flower Hill. The village has a population of 2,770 as of the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Roslyn was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1640s and the village was officially founded in 1644. The village was named after Roslin, Scotland, the ancestral home of the original settlers.
In the late 19th century, Roslyn became a popular summer resort destination for wealthy New Yorkers. The village was home to several grand hotels, including the Roslyn Hotel, which was built in 1883 and was one of the largest hotels in the country at the time.
Geography
Roslyn is located at 40°48'N 73°37'W. It is situated on the North Shore of Long Island, between the villages of East Hills and Flower Hill. The village has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of which is land.
The village is bordered by the Hempstead Harbor to the north, the Long Island Sound to the east, and the villages of East Hills and Flower Hill to the south and west, respectively.
Economy
The economy of Roslyn is largely based on tourism and retail. The village is home to several restaurants, shops, and boutiques, as well as a number of art galleries. The village is also home to the Roslyn Country Club, which is a popular destination for golfers.
