Rensselaer is a city located in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, directly across from Albany, the state capital. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 9,392.
History
Rensselaer was first settled in the late 17th century by Dutch colonists. The city was named after Kiliaen van Rensselaer, a Dutch merchant and one of the original founders of the Dutch West India Company. The city was incorporated in 1793 and was the first incorporated city in Rensselaer County.
In the 19th century, Rensselaer became an important industrial center. The city was home to several large factories, including the Rensselaer Iron Works, which produced iron and steel products. The city also had several railroads, including the New York Central Railroad, which ran through the city.
In the 20th century, Rensselaer experienced a decline in its industrial base. The city's population decreased from a peak of over 10,000 in the 1950s to just over 9,000 in 2010.
Geography
Rensselaer is located at 42°39′N 73°45′W (42.65, -73.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
The city is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, directly across from Albany. The city is bordered by the towns of East Greenbush to the north, North Greenbush to the east, and Schodack to the south.
Economy
Rensselaer's economy is largely based on the service industry. The city is home to several large employers, including the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Albany Medical Center, and the New York State Department of Transportation.
The city also has several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 9,392 people, 3,845 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,220.3 people per square mile (1,624.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 1,845.2 per square mile (715.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.2% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.7% under the age of 18, 17.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,941, and the median income for a family was $45,941. Males had a median income of $35,941 versus $27,941 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,941. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
