Port Leyden Summary

Port Leyden is a small village located in Lewis County, New York. It is situated on the Black River, which is a tributary of the Oswegatchie River. The village is located in the northern part of the county, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border. The population of Port Leyden was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Port Leyden is located at 43°45'25" North, 75°25'45" West (43.756944, -75.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the Black River, which is a tributary of the Oswegatchie River. The Black River is a popular destination for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The village is also located near the Adirondack Mountains, which offer a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and skiing.

History

Port Leyden was first settled in 1802 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The village was originally known as "Port of Leyden" and was named after the town of Leyden, Massachusetts. The village was incorporated in 1851.
