Phelps Summary

Phelps, New York is a small town located in Ontario County, New York. It is situated on the northern edge of the Finger Lakes region, and is bordered by the towns of Manchester, Geneva, and Seneca Falls. The town was named after Oliver Phelps, an early settler and landowner in the area. The population of Phelps was 2,945 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Phelps was originally inhabited by the Seneca people, a member of the Iroquois Confederacy. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and the town of Phelps was officially established in 1827. The town was named after Oliver Phelps, a prominent landowner and early settler in the area.
