Pawling Summary
Pawling is a town located in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 8,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Pawling was originally inhabited by the Wappinger Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The town was established in 1788 and was named after Catherine Pawling, the wife of the first landowner.
The town was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the local residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. During the Civil War, Pawling was the site of a Union Army training camp.
Geography
Pawling is located in southeastern Dutchess County, bordered by Putnam County to the east. It is situated in the Hudson Valley, approximately 70 miles north of New York City.
The town is located in the Appalachian Mountains and is home to several mountain peaks, including Quaker Hill (1,717 feet) and Brace Mountain (2,280 feet). The Appalachian Trail passes through the town.
The town is drained by the Ten Mile River which flows south to the Hudson River

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
