Oxford Summary

Oxford is a town located in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. The town is in the south part of the county and is south of the city of Norwich.

Geography

Oxford is located in the south part of Chenango County, south of the city of Norwich. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 36.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.28%) is water.
The east town line is the border of Madison County, and the south town line is the border of Broome County.
New York State Route 12, an east-west highway, passes through the town. New York State Route 220 is a north-south highway that intersects NY-12 in the hamlet of Oxford.

History

The first settlers arrived in the area around 1790. The town of Oxford was formed in 1817 from the town of Norwich.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,619 people, 1,039 households, and 717 families residing in the town. The population density was 72.3 people per square mile (27.9/km^2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 32.2 per square mile (12.4/km^2).
