Oakdale, New York is a hamlet located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York. It is located on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. History

The area that is now Oakdale was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Indians, a sub-tribe of the Algonquin Nation. The Secatogue Indians were a peaceful tribe that lived off the land, fishing, hunting, and gathering. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The area was originally known as West Sayville, and was part of the Town of Islip. In 1873, the Long Island Rail Road opened a station in the area, and the hamlet was renamed Oakdale. The name was chosen to honor the many oak trees in the area.

Oakdale is located at 40°45'N 73°7'W (40.75, -73.12). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of it land. The hamlet is located on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. It is bordered by the Great South Bay to the north, the hamlet of Sayville to the east, the hamlet of Bohemia to the south, and the hamlet of West Sayville to the west.

The racial makeup of the hamlet was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
