The area that is now Norwood was first settled in 1802 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The village was originally known as "Newtonville" and was later renamed "Norwood" in 1825. The name was chosen in honor of the town of Norwood, Massachusetts.
The village was incorporated in 1853. During the 19th century, Norwood was a thriving industrial center, with several mills and factories located in the area. The village was also home to a number of churches, including the First Congregational Church, which was founded in 1825.

Geography

Norwood is located at 44°41'25" North, 75°10'25" West (44.690278, -75.173611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the Raquette River, which flows through the village. The river is a popular destination for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 463 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 676.3 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
