Minoa Summary
Minoa is a village located in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Minoa was first settled in 1794 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The village was originally known as "Minerva" after the Roman goddess of wisdom, but the name was changed to "Minoa" in 1827. The village was incorporated in 1848.
Minoa was an important stop on the Syracuse and Chenango Valley Railroad, which ran from Syracuse to Greene, New York. The railroad was built in 1869 and operated until the late 1940s.
Geography
Minoa is located at (43.097, -76.17). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Minoa is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and several restaurants. The village is also home to a number of small manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication shop.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.3/km2). There were 1,139 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
