Geography
Medford is located at 40°48'25" North, 72°59'45" West (40.806944, -72.995833). It is situated on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 60 miles east of New York City. The hamlet is bordered by the hamlets of Patchogue to the west, East Patchogue to the northwest, and North Patchogue to the north. To the east is the hamlet of Selden, and to the south is the hamlet of Holtsville.
The terrain of Medford is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The hamlet is located in the Pine Barrens, an area of Long Island characterized by sandy soil and pine trees. The area is also home to several freshwater ponds and lakes, including Lake Ronkonkoma and Lake Panamoka.
History
The area that is now Medford was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1790. The hamlet was named after Medford, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of the first settlers.
In the 19th century, Medford was a popular destination for wealthy New Yorkers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The hamlet was home to several large estates, including the estate of William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
In the early 20th century, Medford began to experience rapid growth as the Long Island Rail Road expanded its service to the area. The hamlet was also home to several large factories, including a paper mill and a brickyard.
