Macedon Summary

Macedon is a town located in Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 8,719 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the ancient kingdom of Macedonia.

History

The area that is now Macedon was first settled in 1789 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was formed in 1823 from the Town of Palmyra. The town was named after the ancient kingdom of Macedonia.
In the early 19th century, the town was a major center for the production of salt. The salt industry was so important to the town that it was nicknamed "Salt City". The salt industry declined in the late 19th century and the town shifted to a more agricultural economy.

Geography

Macedon is located in the northwest corner of Wayne County, bordered by the towns of Palmyra to the east, Walworth to the south, and Ontario and Williamson to the west. The town is located on the northern edge of the Finger Lakes region.
