History
The first settlers arrived in Laurens in 1786. The town was formed from the Town of Unadilla in 1808. The town was named after Henry Laurens, a South Carolina statesman.
Geography
Laurens is located in the south-central part of Otsego County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 36.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square mile (0.28%) is water.
The east town line is the border of Chenango County, and the south town line is the border of Delaware County.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 51.0 people per square mile (19.7/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races.
