History

Kinderhook was first settled in the late 17th century by Dutch immigrants. The town was originally part of the Rensselaerwyck manor, a large estate owned by the Van Rensselaer family. The town was established in 1788 and was named after the Dutch word for "children's corner".
The town was the birthplace of Martin Van Buren, the eighth President of the United States. Van Buren was born in a house in the town in 1782. The house is now a National Historic Site and is open to the public.

Geography

Kinderhook is located in the northwest corner of Columbia County. It is bordered by the towns of Chatham to the north, Ghent to the east, Stuyvesant to the south, and Stockport to the west.
The town is located in the Hudson Valley region of New York. The town is situated on the east bank of the Hudson River, and is part of the Taconic Mountains. The highest point in the town is 1,890 feet (576 m) above sea level.
