Johnson City Summary

Johnson City is a village located in Broome County, New York, United States. It is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 15,174 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Johnson City is located at 42°5′25″N 75°57′7″W (42.090278, -75.951944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

History

The village of Johnson City was incorporated in 1892. It was named after George F. Johnson, a prominent local businessman and philanthropist. Johnson was the founder of the Endicott Johnson Corporation, a major shoe manufacturer in the area.
The village was originally part of the Town of Union, but was later annexed by the Town of Vestal in the early 20th century.

Johnson City is home to several major employers, including the Endicott Johnson Corporation, Lourdes Hospital, and the State University of New York at Binghamton. The village is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 15,174 people, 6,541 households, and 3,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 6,845.3 people per square mile (2,639.2/km2). There were 7,039 housing units at an average density of 3,179.2 per square mile (1,225.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.7% of the population.
There were 6,541 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 15.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $32,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
