East Norwich Summary

East Norwich is a hamlet located in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York. It is located on the North Shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. The hamlet is bordered by Oyster Bay to the west, Syosset to the east, and Jericho to the south.

History

The area that is now East Norwich was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The hamlet was originally known as “Oyster Bay Neck” and was part of the Town of Oyster Bay. In 1845, the hamlet was renamed “East Norwich” after the English city of Norwich.
