History
East Nassau was originally part of the Hempstead Plains, a large area of grassland that stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Hudson River. The area was inhabited by the Algonquin Indians, who called it “Nashaw”, meaning “land of the tall grass”. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1643, when a group of English settlers from Hempstead, Long Island, purchased land from the Algonquin Indians. The area was known as “East Hempstead” until 1875, when it was renamed “East Nassau”.
The area was primarily agricultural until the late 19th century, when it began to develop into a residential community. The first post office was established in 1876, and the first school was built in 1877. The area continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by the 2000 census, the population of East Nassau was 8,945.

East Nassau is located in the town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. It is bordered by the towns of North Hempstead to the north, Oyster Bay to the east, and Hempstead to the south and west.
