Dresden is a town located in Yates County, New York, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Dresden, Germany.

History

The area that is now Dresden was first settled around 1790. The town of Dresden was formed in 1822 from the town of Jerusalem. The town was named after Dresden, Germany.

Geography

Dresden is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is bordered by the towns of Jerusalem to the north, Middlesex to the east, Potter to the south, and Benton to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 36.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.28%) is water.
The east town line is the border of Ontario County. The town is in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 51.0 people per square mile (19.7/km^2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 23.3 per square mile (9.0/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.41% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $43,750. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. Dresden is a rural town with a primarily agricultural economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a winery, a brewery, and a few small retail stores. The town is also home to a number of farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms.
The town is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Finger Lakes National Forest, the Finger Lakes Trail, and the Keuka Lake State Park. The town is also home to a number of wineries and breweries, as well as a number of restaurants and bed and breakfasts.
The town is served by the Dresden Central School District, which includes a K-12 school. The district also operates a public library. The town is also home to a number of churches, including the Dresden United Methodist Church, the Dresden Presbyterian Church, and the Dresden Baptist Church.
