Deer Park Summary

Deer Park is a hamlet located in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, New York. It is situated on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. The hamlet is bordered by the villages of Babylon and North Babylon to the west, and the hamlets of Wyandanch and Wheatley Heights to the east.

History

Deer Park was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Indians, who were part of the Algonquin Nation. The area was first settled by Europeans in the mid-17th century, and was known as “Little Neck”. The name was changed to “Deer Park” in 1856, when the area was developed as a hunting preserve. The preserve was owned by the prominent Smith family, who also owned much of the surrounding land.
In the late 19th century, Deer Park began to develop as a residential community. The Long Island Rail Road opened a station in Deer Park in 1867, which helped to spur the growth of the area. The hamlet was incorporated as a village in 1891, but was dissolved in 1920.

Geography

Deer Park is located at 40°45'N 73°19'W (40.75, -73.32). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.
The hamlet is located on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. It is bordered by the villages of Babylon and North Babylon to the west, and the hamlets of Wyandanch and Wheatley Heights to the east.

Economy

Deer Park is primarily a residential community, with a few small businesses located in the area. The largest employer in the hamlet is the Tanger Outlets, a large outlet mall located on the west side of the hamlet. Other businesses in the area include a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 27,745 people, 9,945 households, and 7,541 families residing in the hamlet. The population density was 11,945.3 people per square mile (4,611.2/km2). There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 4,541.3 per square mile (1,753.2/km2). The racial makeup of the hamlet was 79.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 9,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the hamlet, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the hamlet was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the hamlet was $26,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
