Geography
Cohocton is located in the western part of Steuben County, bordered by the towns of Wayland to the north, Dansville to the east, Prattsburgh to the south, and Avoca to the west. The Cohocton River flows through the town from north to south, and the Canacadea Creek flows through the western part of the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2sqmi, of which 36.1sqmi is land and 0.1sqmi, or 0.22%, is water.
History
The area that is now Cohocton was first settled around 1790. The town of Cohocton was formed in 1808 from part of the town of Dansville.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the town. The population density was 78.7 people per square mile (30.4/km^2). There were 1,213 housing units at an average density of 33.5 per square mile (12.9/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.45% White, 0.21% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.04.
