The area that is now Champlain was first settled in 1731 by French-Canadian fur traders. The town was established in 1808 from part of the town of Plattsburgh. The town was named after the French explorer Samuel de Champlain.
Geography
Champlain is located in the northeast corner of Clinton County, bordered to the north by the Canadian province of Quebec. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles (86.1 km2), of which 32.9 square miles (85.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2) (0.86%) is water.
The town is located on the west bank of the Richelieu River, which forms the international border with Quebec. The town is served by New York State Route 9, which runs north-south through the town, and New York State Route 22, which runs east-west.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $48,958. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females.
