Cato Summary

Cato is a town located in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Cato, a character in the play Cato by Joseph Addison.

Geography

Cato is located in the northwest corner of Cayuga County, bordered by Oswego County to the north, Onondaga County to the east, and the town of Conquest to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2sqmi, of which 35.9sqmi is land and 0.3sqmi, or 0.86%, is water.
The west town line is the border of Oswego County, and the north town line is the border of Onondaga County.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 817 families residing in the town. The population density was 82.1 people per square mile (31.7/km^2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 32.8 per square mile (12.7/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.24% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.90% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
