Castile Summary

Castile is a village located in Wyoming County, New York, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. The village is named after the Spanish province of Castile.

History

The area that is now Castile was first settled in 1802 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was incorporated in 1836. The village was originally known as "Castile Corners" due to its location at the intersection of two major roads.
The village was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the local residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Castile is largely based on tourism. The village is home to several popular attractions, including Letchworth State Park, the Genesee Valley Greenway, and the Genesee River.
The village is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and a local brewery.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 662.2 per square mile (255.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.37% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
