Cape Vincent Summary

Cape Vincent is a town located in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is named after French explorer and naval officer Vincent de Rochemorin, who was the first to sail into the area in 1759.

Geography

Cape Vincent is located in the northeast corner of Jefferson County, on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. It is bordered to the north by the St. Lawrence River and to the east by the town of Lyme in Jefferson County. The town of Clayton is to the south, and the town of Orleans is to the west.
The town is located on a peninsula, with the St. Lawrence River to the north and Lake Ontario to the south. The easternmost point of the town is the Cape Vincent Light, located at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River.
The town is served by U.S. Route 12, which runs east-west through the town, and by New York State Route 12E, which runs north-south.

History

The area that is now Cape Vincent was first settled by Europeans in 1759, when French explorer and naval officer Vincent de Rochemorin sailed into the area. The town was officially established in 1849, when it was separated from the town of Lyme.
The town was named after de Rochemorin, and the cape at the easternmost point of the town was also named after him.

Economy

The economy of Cape Vincent is largely based on tourism. The town is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities. There are several marinas in the town, as well as a number of restaurants and other businesses catering to tourists.
The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,817 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 79.3 people per square mile (30.6/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 38.7 per square mile (14.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
