Cairo Summary

Cairo is a town located in Greene County, New York, United States. It is part of the Catskill Mountains region and is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Cairo is located at 42°19'25" North, 74°10'25" West (42.323607, -74.173690). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 27.9 square miles (72.2 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2) of it (1.07%) is water.
The town is in the Catskill Mountains and is bordered by the towns of Catskill to the north, Coxsackie to the east, New Baltimore to the south, and Athens to the west. The Hudson River forms the western boundary of the town.

History

The town of Cairo was established in 1788, and was named after the city of Cairo, Egypt. The town was originally part of the town of Catskill, and was known as the "Upper District of Catskill". The town was formed from parts of the towns of Catskill, Coxsackie, and New Baltimore.
The first settlers in the town were Dutch and German immigrants, who arrived in the late 1700s. The town was an agricultural community, and the main crops were wheat, corn, and potatoes.
In the early 1800s, the town was a popular destination for tourists, who came to enjoy the scenery and the outdoor activities. The town was also known for its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties.
In the late 1800s, the town began to decline in population, as many of the residents moved away to find work in the cities. The town was also affected by the Great Depression, and many of the businesses in the town closed.

Economy

The economy of Cairo is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The town is home to several tourist attractions, including the Catskill Mountain Railroad, the Cairo Historical Society, and the Cairo Public Library.

The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
