Geography
Cairo is located at 42°19'25" North, 74°10'25" West (42.323607, -74.173690). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 27.9 square miles (72.2 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2) of it (1.07%) is water.
The town is in the Catskill Mountains and is bordered by the towns of Catskill to the north, Coxsackie to the east, New Baltimore to the south, and Athens to the west. The Hudson River forms the western boundary of the town.
History
The town of Cairo was established in 1788, and was named after the city of Cairo, Egypt. The town was originally part of the town of Catskill, and was known as the "Upper District of Catskill". The town was formed from parts of the towns of Catskill, Coxsackie, and New Baltimore.
