History
The area that is now Broadalbin was first settled in 1772 by a group of Dutch settlers. The village was originally known as "Broadalbin Flats" and was incorporated in 1837. The name Broadalbin is derived from the Dutch word "broad" meaning "wide" and "albin" meaning "white". The name was chosen to describe the wide, white sandbars in the nearby Mohawk River.
The village was an important stop on the Erie Canal, which was completed in 1825. The canal brought increased trade and commerce to the area, and the village grew rapidly. By the mid-19th century, Broadalbin was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a grist mill, a saw mill, a tannery, a brewery, and several stores.

There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
