History
Brewster was first settled in 1760 by John Brewster, a Quaker from Rhode Island. The village was incorporated in 1849. The village was named after John Brewster, who was the first settler in the area.
Geography
Brewster is located at 41°24'25" North, 73°36'17" West (41.406944, -73.604722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Brewster is a small village with a population of 2,390 people. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and a few restaurants. The village also has a few small manufacturing companies.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,390 people, 890 households, and 602 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,976.2 people per square mile (761.3/km2). There were 930 housing units at an average density of 772.2 per square mile (297.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 890 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
