Geography

Bergen is located at 42°59'N 78°17'W (42.983, -78.283). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles (85.9 km2), of which 33.1 square miles (85.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.30%) is water.
The town is located in the northwest corner of Genesee County, and is bordered by the towns of Byron, Elba, and Oakfield. The town is located on the eastern edge of the Genesee Valley, and is drained by Tonawanda Creek. The highest point in the town is near the northern town line, where the elevation reaches 1,400 feet (427 m) above sea level.

History

The area that is now Bergen was first settled around 1802. The town of Bergen was formed in 1812 from the town of Batavia. The town was named after Bergen, Norway, the hometown of an early settler.

The first post office in the town was established in 1817 The first schoolhouse was built in 1820

The Genesee Valley Canal, which ran through the town, was completed in 1841. The canal was used to transport goods from Rochester to Buffalo.

The town of Bergen was reduced in size in 1846 when the town of Byron was formed

Economy

The economy of Bergen is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a hardware store, a lumber yard, and a few restaurants.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the town. The population density was 89.1 people per square mile (34.4/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 35.2 per square mile (13.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
