The town was named after the beacon fires that were lit to warn of approaching British ships during the Revolutionary War.
In the 19th century, Beacon became an important industrial center, with several factories and mills located along the Hudson River. The city was also home to the first commercial steamboat service in the United States, which began in 1807.
In the late 19th century, Beacon became a popular tourist destination, with several grand hotels and resorts located along the river. The city was also home to the first public park in the United States, Fishkill Park, which was established in 1871.
