Bayport Summary

Bayport is a hamlet located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York. It is situated on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. The hamlet is bordered by the Great South Bay to the north, the hamlet of Blue Point to the east, and the hamlet of Sayville to the west.

History

The area that is now Bayport was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1761. The hamlet was originally known as West Sayville, but was renamed Bayport in 1872.
The hamlet was a popular summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area was home to several large estates, including the Bayport House, which was built in 1872 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Bayport is located at 40°45'N 73°7'W. It has a total area of 1.3 square miles, all of which is land. The hamlet is situated on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. The hamlet is bordered by the Great South Bay to the north, the hamlet of Blue Point to the east, and the hamlet of Sayville to the west.
The hamlet is located in the Town of Islip, which is part of Suffolk County. The Town of Islip is divided into two townships, Islip and Islip Terrace. Bayport is located in the Islip Township.
