History

The area that is now Atlantic Beach was originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians, a sub-tribe of the Lenape people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century, and the area was known as “Reynolds Channel”. In 1837, the area was renamed “Atlantic Beach” after the Atlantic Ocean.
In the late 19th century, the area began to develop as a resort destination. The first hotel, the Atlantic Beach Hotel, was built in 1876. The hotel was a popular destination for wealthy New Yorkers, and the area soon became known as a fashionable summer resort.
In the early 20th century, the village was incorporated as a village in the Town of Hempstead. The village was developed as a residential community, and many of the original summer homes were converted into year-round residences.
