Argyle Summary

Argyle is a town located in Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Argyle was first settled in 1764 by Dutch and English settlers. The town was formed in 1803 from the town of Greenwich. The town was named after the Earl of Argyll, a Scottish nobleman.

Geography

Argyle is located in the eastern part of Washington County, bordered by the towns of Greenwich to the west, Fort Ann to the north, Hartford to the east, and White Creek to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 35.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles, or 0.86%, is water.

The Batten Kill a tributary of the Hudson River flows through the town

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,845 people, 1,521 households, and 1,093 families residing in the town. The population density was 107.2 people per square mile. There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 47.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.45% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $47,917. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females.
