Amityville Summary

Amityville is a village located in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 9,523 at the 2010 census.

History

The area now known as Amityville was originally inhabited by the Massapequa Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1653, when the Dutch West India Company purchased the land from the Indians. The area was originally known as Huntington South, and was part of the Town of Huntington. In 1859, the area was renamed Amityville after the Amityville Purchase, a land deal between the Town of Huntington and the South Side Railroad Company.

Geography

Amityville is located at 40°39′N 73°25′W (40.65, -73.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Amityville is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses located in the village. The village is home to several restaurants, including the popular Amityville Diner, as well as a few small retail stores. The village is also home to a number of professional offices, including doctors, lawyers, and accountants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 9,521 people, 3,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,323.3 people per square mile (1,669.2/km2). There were 3,637 housing units at an average density of 1,637.3 per square mile (631.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $68,958. Males had a median income of $50,917 versus $35,921 for females. The per capita income for the village was $26,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
