Altamont Summary

Altamont is a small village located in Albany County, New York, United States. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Altamont was originally inhabited by the Mohican Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The village was originally known as "Altamontville" and was incorporated in 1887.
The village was named after the nearby Altamont Pass, which was named after the nearby mountain of the same name. The mountain was named by surveyors in the late 1700s after a mountain in Scotland.

Geography

Altamont is located at 42°45'25" North, 74°2'25" West (42.756944, -74.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Altamont is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,814 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,541.2 people per square mile (982.2/km2).
