Geography
Alexander is located in the northwest corner of Genesee County, bordered by the towns of Pembroke to the north, Batavia to the east, and Bethany to the south. To the west, Alexander is bordered by Orleans County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2 square miles, of which 36.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.28%) is water.

The economy of Alexander is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms. The town also has several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a gas station, and a few convenience stores.

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,945 people, 2,093 households, and 1,541 families residing in the town. The population density was 164.7 people per square mile (63.6/km2). There were 2,232 housing units at an average density of 61.9 per square mile (23.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.06.
