The highest point in Succasunna is located at the intersection of Route 10 and Route 46, where the elevation is approximately 500 feet above sea level. The climate in Succasunna is typical of the northeastern United States, with cold winters and hot, humid summers.
History
The area that is now Succasunna was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century, and the community was officially established in 1740. The name Succasunna is derived from the Lenape word for “black earth” or “black soil”, referring to the dark, fertile soil in the area.
In the 19th century, Succasunna was a rural farming community. The Morris Canal, which connected the Delaware River to the Hudson River, was built through the area in 1831, and the community began to grow. The Morris and Essex Railroad was built in 1837, connecting Succasunna to Newark and New York City.
In the 20th century, Succasunna continued to grow, and the population increased from 1,000 in 1900 to 8,845 in 2010. The community is now a suburban bedroom community, with many residents commuting to New York City for work.
