Hackensack, NJ is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is the county seat of Bergen County and is located approximately 12 miles northwest of New York City. The city has a population of approximately 44,000 people and is the second most populous city in the county.
History
The area that is now Hackensack was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1647 and the area was officially incorporated as a township in 1710. The city was named after the Hackensack River, which was named after the Lenape word “Ackingsah-sack”, which means “place of many sturgeons”.
In the late 19th century, Hackensack was a major center for manufacturing and industry. The city was home to several factories, including the Hackensack Woolen Mill, which was the largest woolen mill in the United States at the time. The city also had a thriving shipbuilding industry, which produced several ships for the US Navy during World War I.
In the early 20th century, Hackensack began to transition from an industrial city to a more residential city. The city was home to several large estates, including the estate of John Jacob Astor, which is now the site of the Hackensack University Medical Center.
