South Bend Summary

South Bend is a city located in the state of Nebraska, in the United States of America. It is located in the southeastern corner of the state, in the Platte River Valley. The city is the county seat of Platte County and is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 4,902.

History

The area that is now South Bend was first settled in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The settlement was originally known as “Ohio Bend”, but was later changed to South Bend due to its location on the south side of the Platte River. The city was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, South Bend was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was also home to a large number of German immigrants, who established a number of businesses in the area.

Geography

South Bend is located at 41°14'N 96°37'W (41.2333, -96.6167). The city is situated in the Platte River Valley, which is part of the Great Plains region of the United States. The city is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Omaha, Nebraska.
The city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of which is land. The city is located at an elevation of 1,072 feet (326 m).

Economy

The economy of South Bend is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a large meatpacking plant. The city is also home to a number of retail stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,902 people, 1,945 households, and 1,269 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,743.3 people per square mile (1,444.2/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 1,597.3 per square mile (617.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
