Fessenden is a small city located in Wells County, North Dakota. It is situated in the north-central part of the state, approximately 50 miles northwest of Jamestown. The city has a population of 1,200 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

Fessenden was founded in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city was named after William Fessenden, a former U.S. Senator from Maine. The city was incorporated in 1887 and has been the county seat of Wells County since its formation in 1891.
The city was a major hub for the railroad industry in the early 20th century. The Northern Pacific Railroad had a large presence in the city, and the city was home to several grain elevators and other businesses related to the railroad.
