History

The area that is now Bottineau was first settled in 1883 by French-Canadian settlers. The city was named after Pierre Bottineau, a French-Canadian fur trader and explorer who was instrumental in the development of the area. The city was officially incorporated in 1884.
In the early 1900s, the city experienced a period of growth due to the development of the railroad. The Great Northern Railway was built through the city in 1906, and the Northern Pacific Railway followed in 1910. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the city, and helped to spur economic growth.

Geography

Bottineau is located in the north-central region of North Dakota, in the Souris River Valley. The city is situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 83 and North Dakota State Highway 5. The city is located approximately 75 miles north of Minot and 90 miles south of Williston.
The city has a total area of 1.7 square miles, all of which is land. The city is located at an elevation of 1,845 feet above sea level.

Economy

The economy of Bottineau is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the International Peace Garden, the Bottineau Winter Park, and the Dakota Zoo.
