Mount Gilead, North Carolina is a small town located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Montgomery County. The town was founded in 1790 and is the county seat of Montgomery County. The population of Mount Gilead was 1,845 in the 2010 census.

Geography

Mount Gilead is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Montgomery County, North Carolina. The town is situated at an elevation of 845 feet above sea level. The town is located at the intersection of US Highway 220 and NC Highway 109. The town is surrounded by the Uwharrie National Forest and is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Charlotte.

History

Mount Gilead was founded in 1790 and is the county seat of Montgomery County. The town was named after the biblical Mount Gilead, which is mentioned in the Old Testament. The town was originally a trading post and was the site of a Revolutionary War battle in 1781. The town was incorporated in 1891 and has remained a small, rural community ever since.

Economy
