Geography

Grifton is located at 35°41'25" North, 77°25'45" West (35.690278, -77.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Grifton is located in the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina. The terrain is generally flat, with some rolling hills. The town is located in the Neuse River Basin, and is surrounded by farmland. The town is located near the intersection of US Highway 11 and NC Highway 11.

The racial makeup of the town was 68.2% White, 28.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
