Gerton is a small unincorporated community located in Henderson County, North Carolina. It is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 25 miles southeast of Asheville. The community is named after the Gerton family, who settled in the area in the late 1800s.
History
Gerton was first settled in the late 1800s by the Gerton family. The family was originally from Germany and had immigrated to the United States in the mid-1800s. They settled in the area and began farming the land. The community was officially established in 1891 when the post office was opened.
The community grew slowly over the years, but remained relatively small. In the early 1900s, the Gerton family opened a general store in the community, which served as a gathering place for the locals. The store was a popular spot for locals to gather and socialize.
In the 1950s, the community began to experience a population boom as people moved to the area to take advantage of the area’s natural beauty and the growing tourism industry. The population of Gerton peaked in the 1970s, when it had a population of around 500 people.
Geography
Gerton is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The community is situated at an elevation of 2,400 feet and is surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. The area is known for its stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The community is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Asheville and is accessible via US Highway 74. The nearest major city is Charlotte, which is located approximately 90 miles to the east.
