Kittery, Maine is a town located in York County, Maine, United States. It is situated along the Piscataqua River, which separates Maine from New Hampshire. History

Kittery was first settled in 1623 by a group of English colonists led by Richard Vines. The town was incorporated in 1647 and named after the town of Kittery in Devon, England. During the American Revolution, Kittery was a major shipbuilding center, and the town was home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which was established in 1800. The shipyard was a major employer in the area until its closure in the 1990s.

Geography

Kittery is located at 43°6′N 70°45′W (43.097, -70.749). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 25.2 square miles (65.3 km2) of it is land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km2) of it (10.63%) is water.

Economy

Kittery is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and manufacturing companies. The town is also home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which is a major employer in the area. The shipyard is the largest employer in the town, with over 4,000 employees. As of the 2010 census, there were 9,490 people, 3,945 households, and 2,619 families residing in the town. The population density was 376.2 people per square mile (145.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 161.7 per square mile (62.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,945 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
