Vienna Summary

Vienna is a small town located in Dorchester County, Maryland, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Nanticoke River, approximately 10 miles south of Cambridge. The town was founded in 1706 and incorporated in 1867. As of the 2010 census, the population of Vienna was 1,072.

Geography

Vienna is located at 38°41'25"N 75°51'45"W (38.690278, -75.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Vienna was founded in 1706 by a group of settlers from England. The town was originally known as "Vienna Crossroads" due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. In 1867, the town was officially incorporated as Vienna.
The town was a major center of the oyster industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town was also home to a number of canneries, which processed the oysters for shipment to other parts of the country.

Economy

Vienna is a small, rural town with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a convenience store, a gas station, and a few restaurants. The town is also home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,072 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 672.3 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 17.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845.
