Edgewood Summary

Edgewood is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Harford County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,562 at the 2010 census. It is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Baltimore and 35 miles southwest of Philadelphia.

History

The area now known as Edgewood was originally inhabited by the Susquehannock Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The area was known as “Edge’s Wood” after a local landowner, and the name was eventually shortened to Edgewood.
In the early 1800s, the area was primarily used for farming and timber harvesting. In the late 1800s, the area began to develop as a residential community. The first post office was established in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Edgewood began to grow rapidly. The area was home to several large farms, and the population increased from just over 500 in 1910 to over 2,000 by 1930.
In the 1950s, Edgewood began to experience rapid growth due to the construction of the Edgewood Arsenal and the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The population increased from just over 2,000 in 1950 to over 10,000 by 1970.

Geography

Edgewood is located at 39°27′N 76°17′W (39.45, -76.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Edgewood’s economy is largely based on the military installations in the area. The Edgewood Arsenal and the Aberdeen Proving Ground are two of the largest employers in the area. Other major employers include the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground, the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, and the Edgewood Retail Park.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,562 people, 8,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,988.3 people per square mile (1,156.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 1,164.2 per square mile (449.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 64.2% White, 25.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
