Geography
Riverdale is located at 41°41'17" North, 87°41'17" West (41.688, -87.688). According to the 2010 census, Riverdale has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all land.
History
The area that is now Riverdale was first settled in the early 1800s by German and Irish immigrants. The village was incorporated in 1892 and was named after the nearby River Des Plaines. The village was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s it began to develop into a residential suburb of Chicago.
In the 1950s, Riverdale experienced a population boom as many people moved to the area from the city of Chicago. This growth continued into the 1960s and 1970s, and by the 1980s Riverdale had become a thriving community.
Economy
Riverdale is a primarily residential community, but it does have some commercial and industrial businesses. The village is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The village also has a few industrial businesses, including a steel mill and a plastics factory.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 13,549 people, 4,945 households, and 3,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,133.3 people per square mile (1,206.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 1,183.3 per square mile (457.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 57.2% White, 33.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 4,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $48,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
